Stone spiral staircases are direct descendants of original designs produced by our ancestors over a thousand years ago. Spiral staircases can all trace their origins back to the original stone structures that were used in castles and fortifications to save space and make life as difficult as possible for any attackers. In fact traditional stone spiral staircases were always designed to run clockwise to allow any defenders at the top to swing their swords down on their attackers, whilst the attackers themselves would be unable to respond as their right sides are blocked by the central support of the staircase. Fortunately modern stone spiral staircases are unlikely to be laid siege to any time in the future so they are no longer bound by the more traditional rules of design and as a result a large number of stunning designs exist on the market.
Whilst many people shopping for stone spiral staircases will be looking for a traditional, utilitarian set of stairs that are sturdy and functional (and aesthetically pleasing) it is possible to produce elegant and beautiful designs that are supported in a variety of ways and constructed from modern stones that can be produced to be just as strong but far less dense than their ancient counterparts chiseled straight out of the bedrock. Stone spiral staircases are bold and convey a sense of solidity, when climbing stone spiral staircases you can be certain that you are walking on a structure that was built to last and could feasibly last many hundreds of years before needing all but the most basic of maintenance.
